Exterior
Adalia bipunctata (the two-spot ladybird or two-spotted ladybug) is a little predator beetle of the family Coccinellidae, its body length is 0.8 – 18 mm. It has an oval or circular-oval shape, strongly convex on the top, wings are red with two black spots on a red base. The lower side of the body is almost flat or slightly convex. Some groups of ladybirds have an elongated-oval body, more-less flattened. The head is little and short, the eyes are large. The adult females lay eggs near aphids colonies in small groups, so that the hatched larvae can easily find food. In her life cycle, the female lays up to 500 eggs.
Life span:
The life cycle has 6 development instars: eggs, 3 larval stages, pupa, adult.
The egg is large (0.4 mm in size), extended to the middle, and sharply narrowed to the base. The female lays them in groups of 10 to 40 at the bottom of the leaf.
The larva goes through 3 larval stages for 7 – 8 days. It molts 3 times, at the end of the third one its larvae pupate for 2 days and then becomes the pupa. In the first larval stage, the larvae have a monochromatic color, and with time they become bright.
At first, the pupa is yellow, then becomes darker. The ladybug spends 5 to 7 days developing in a pupa, and all this time the pupa can move.
Feeding:
The larva eats from 5 to 7 aphids daily. The adult eats 30 aphids daily.
